No more Dextron in the T/case - Mercon V replaces Dextron completly - Everywhere!!!!

I did the full service flush on my 98 E4OD - My trans was slipping until I flushed and switched over to Amsoil - The oil doesn't heat up for one and it does'nt lag so much before it shifts. I add friction modifier (recommended by my tranny guy) same stuff you put in the rear ends. That was 6000 miles ago.

Biggest advantage to using Amsoil - it doesn't heat up like Mercon V (HEAT KILLS)

Dextrons completly out of the picture now - don't use it - it's chit!!

If it hasn't been flushed before you may be asking for trouble. I had my old 2000 Flushed at 89k and at 96K the tranny acted up first not shifting from 1st to 2nd to a real hard shift from 1st to 2nd so I traded it in for my 05. Instead of puttting putting 2k into rebuilt tranny for my old truck. You might want to do the flush and filter just to be safe.

My '98 4R70W used 12 quarts with a TC drain and pan drop w/ filter change. The system holds 13.9 quarts according to my manual.

As far as how many bottles, me with the extra 2 quart capacity pan use around 14 bottles, almost positive. I buy 15 just to be safe. Anyone else with the regular pan should be cool with 13 bottles.

IndianaFord -

Depends on your trans - two type's of auto's in the 98 -

Trans Code U = 4R70w 14 qrts
Trans Code E = E4OD 17 qrts

I rounded up on the quanities - If flushing, make sure you get the proper procedure. Post if you need it.

I already ordered 16 qts of the ATF and 7 qts of 5w30 from Amsoil. I have the 4R70W, I quess I will just have a few extras. I am not going to flush it. Just pan and TC. I have 94k on it already with no problems. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me.

I've used the Amsoil ATF in my '98 since the first trans flush at 15,000 miles.
She's got 232,000 on the original tranny and still shifts like new, no leaks, no shudder. Also this is with towing a 20' boat every weekend in the summer.

flushing of transmission

I know of 3 unfortunate people who have had transmission flushed in their vehicles all three were having transmission rebuilt within 500 miles I changed my fluid in my 97 f-150 20,000 miles ago still shifts great no problems, so i would never have a flush done on any vehicle just fluid and filter change.

I get mine done every 2 years, been done this way since new.
(I'd go the mileage route but she only sees about 12K per year).

I drop the pan, clean the filter, drain the torque converter.

Can get all but a half-quart out of it.

There is no drain plug on an '04, but you can use this method to change all of the fluid:
