OD Rattle 'N Shake

Hi All,

My high mile (166K) -97 F150 make a small rattle when going into or out of OD. Hence it is during acceleration, deceleration, working a hill on the highway, etc.

Tranny seems to be great otherwise, firm crisp shifts, no noise. No leaks and there is fluid (maybe too much even?), recently changed it looks like (or maybe it doesn't get 'dirty' like oil? )

When this happends there is a rattling sound and it feels like you're driving over a washboard... very quick, probably a sec or less, and then it is in OD or the lower gear it was going to...

Something known?

Thanks!!

I don't know what severe would be... it's just for a brief moment but you can sertainly hear and feel it.

I have no idea on the fluid change history...?? Got the car (very) used. If that may help I'll have it flushed and refilled. How would that help?

Thanks!!

To check for converter shudder, get it into OD then with steady throttle apply brakes lightly to cause the converter to unlock then release the brake.
Doing this should cause the converter to un-lock then lock again within several seconds.
If you feel the same thing as before then the conveter is suddering on attempt to lock up.
A change to fresh fluid may help but with that mileage it may not..

Thank You!

Will try that next time out...

It's no biggie and I'll drive it until it doesn't engage anymore but was currious on what it may be and how much for the fix...

I had a friend who's a mech ride with me and he said it's the OD engagement ring... there were some fancy technical terms but as I understand it there is a ring around the converter that close together and lock in when in overdrive...?? The 'claws' that lock in get bad with time and miles and engaging and disengaging gets harder and that's the noise...??

Of Topic: Built54; All those mods and 'only' 265? I guess these drivetrains rob allot of power? 25%? Sorry if I'm ignorant, I'm used to Mustangs and making them go faster, a 4.6 with your mods would make over 300 to the wheels... I have a built and blown mid 500 RWHP 05...

Yes thats it. 4x4 and 20s, which are heavy. the drivetrain loss is about 22%, about 325 at the flywheel. It halls butt though.

the OD solenoid is bad in it because the valve bodys in the 97-98's were notorious for loosing pressure from poor design so the valves in the valve body would side feed with as little as 30K miles on the trucks and over time just gets worse and worse and eventually wears the convertor down and the OD solenoid.
