OD light will not go out....intermittent?

Hi gang,

Today i had the ABS light come on when i spun my tires in the dirt doing a 3 point turn. It stayed on, but went off when i turned the truck off then back on. It drove normal all the way to work. After i shut the truck off again and later got in it, the OD light was on in the shifter handle and now will not go out! It cant go into overdrive! Then today i started the truck and the light was off, it shifted normal as can be. It never came back on again until i re-started the truck and it came back on and stayed there.

I've checked all the fuses and nothing is blown. I've reset the battery thinking it was a computer glitch......no help.

Any ideas? Is there a electric OD switch/box on the tranny that may have blown out? If this is a switch, where is it located and how hard to change out?

Thanks for the help!
Glade

Pull the column shroud and inspect for wiring damage where the wiring exits the shifter shaft into the column.

Is there a switch or wiring under the truck that could cause this? Yesterday i crossed a small ditch and when the truck flexed, the light went out. After i shut it off, and turned it on again, the light came back on.

If it may be something in the handle, how do i get the handle apart to see it?

Thanks,
Glade

I found that by pushing on the rubber boot that goes into the shifter column that the light will come on and off.
How do i get the back portion of the column apart to fix the bad wiring? Any ideas or instructions would greatly help me out!

Thanks,
Glade

Fixxed!

Just to let you all know, i fixed the problem.
It was shorted/fused wiring coming off the shifter lever switch. Spiced two wires back together and everything is A-O-K! Thanks for the help!

Just in case anyone else has this problem, the shroud around the steering column is easy...once you know how to get it off! Take the 3 bolts off the bottom piece, then pull back towards the rear of truck and down, it will come right off. For the top, unscrew the raise/lower lever on the left hand side, then you will need to take the ignition out. Put the ignition to run, then get a small screwdriver and push up on the pin hole unerneath while wiggling the ignition key receptacle. It will come out from the column. Carefully remove the upper shroud. Once that is done, you can see the wiring coming from the shifter lever. Mine was pinched and shorted about 2 inches from where it goes up and inside the lever. There are 3 wires inside the bundle, simply peel back the rubber and splice the affected wires. Make sure to put the ignition back in for a quick test, then reverse the removal procedure. You're done!
