Bad Torque converter
Bad Torque converter
One of my friends has a high pitched whine coming from the area in front of the tranny when he gives it some gas in park, or while driving it. It's a constant whine that falls off slowly after the accelerator is released. While in park or neutral there is an intermittent squeak from the same area that goes away when the truck is placed in Drive or Reverse. Does this sound like a problem with the torque converter?
If so, what are the likely consequences of him continuing to drive it until it's repaired?

It's an '01 Lightning. He's decided not to drive it until he's had it looked at.
I'm having the same whine or whistle doing it exactly when you mentioned. It's a 2000 4x4 w/5.4 4r70w tranny. I'm going to try changing the fluid to see if that does anything, because I'm also having shift issues from 2-3 and 3-4 spiratically. It's like I threw it in neutral above 3000 rpm's, but the whistle seems to be temperature sensitive leading me to believe fluid, about time to change anyhow. I was having a bitch of a time pinpointing the whistle, can't hear it anywhere's but the cab so I've always wondered WTF? Maybe I can tie all problems together for one fix. I just wanted to chime in here as I have the same probs needing an answer and hoping to offer any help if I find out sooner.
Well, I changed the filter/ fluid and haven't had a chance to really drive, just around the block. It seems to shut the whistle up, but we'll see. The shifting seems better too, again, we'll see.
Well, no dice on getting rid of the whistle. It seems changing the fluid makes the tranny feel new again, but the whistle is not as bad so I can't say why or why not. Oh well, new fluid is better than old and really there wasn't alot of crap inside so whewww what a relief.
Blue20004x4, I have the same prob
I believe I have the same vehicle as you; 2000 F150 4.6 4x4 but my tranny whines bad and sounds just like the P/S pump is very low on fluid. People walking down the street look at me with fear in thier eyes. Is/was yours that loud??? The local Ford dealer just quoted me between $2200 to $2700 for rebuild or replace. Aamco quoted a rebuild at about $1400 to $2100. I think I will go with the fluid and filter change also and see what happens.
