i searched for 'loose shifter' and similar but didnt find what i was looking for.

the console shifter is loose- it works but its so sloppy my g/f has a tendency to drive it around in '2', which doesnt help the gas mileage with a 351.

by loose i mean there is a lot of slop when you are changing gears- the handle will move a good 4 inches before it starts to move the indicator.

my question is: if i take apart the console, will it be obvious what to tighten? if i cant be tightened, do i need to replace a part i can get only at the dealer? im an experienced home mechanic, but thought if someone has already fixed this i could benefit from your experience.

I don't have one of these (stickshift in the '92), but I remember reading there are two screws holding the shifter on. Take off the bottom of the steering column and check it out.
