E=Electronic Controlled
4=Four forward gears
OD=Overdrive equipped.
The E40D was superceded by the 4R100 in all production around January of 98 (or was it 99?) for vehicles that got the heavier duty tranny.

Thats the 4R100 in the 02 ther Navi, the 4R100 was a '98ish replacement for the E4OD. Same code, same pan, same gears, but updated internals.
So what is the difference between lockin out OD by the button and shifting to a seperate D from OD like you say? Must be a lincoln thing...
