Will 5 speed tranny hold up with new motor?
I have a 97 F-150 4x4 5 speed 4.6L truck. I am having me a new motor with a lot more horsepower than what came in the truck installed in the near future. I am wondering if the 5 speed transmission that's in the truck will be able to hold up under the extra horsepower of the new motor. I know there are a lot of hopped up 4.6L motors, but how many of you with manual transmissions have had any problems with the stock tranny? If so, what did you do to fix the problem? About how much did it cost? I allready have a SPEC stage 3 clutch in the truck, so I think I am fine there. Any help will be appreciated. THANKS!!!
What you gonna be doin? The M5OD-R2 isn't the strongest choice out there, but I give it lots of abuse behind a 302 and 4.6 every day no problem, and have towed big in the past with a few others. If your goin muddin, crawlin, or big tires I'd reccomend a ZF-5 or 6 from a Fsuperduty truck. Bulletproof, deep granny gear, nice ratio spacing, and OD.

I beat the living snot out of mine. I can do a Clutch R&R in about 5 hours, excluding flywheel refacing. I can rebuild an M5OD in about the same time if I don't have to press off the input shaft bearing or the center bearing on the output. You get better at it after you have done a few.
Keep an eye on the pilot bearing and the input shaft bearing. Unfortunatly the only way to do that requires removing the tranny.
The ZF out of the SD will require a few mods. Like drive shaft length adjustments. The shift linkage is a bit off. The T-case from your F-150 will not fit so you will need that too and the slip yoke too. You will need a flywheel and clutch from the SD. If your 4.6 isa Romeo you are sol as it is a 6 bolt crank and there are no 6 bolt SD flywheels out there. Oh, don.t forget the external slave from the ZF tranny.
Take it easy and it should last for quite a while. Depending on how you drive it it may very well last forever.

I'm not gonna be doin any mudding or crawling, and tire size is 285/60/17. Might up wheels and tires to 20 inch later. The most it would probably see is, creeping in first gear then flooring it through the gears with Hurst short throw shifter.
Ford never produced a 5.4 with a manual transmission. If you want to add one It is not hard unless you have a 4x4. Then it gets difficult to find a tranny that will allow you to bolt up a t-case. The only other option would be to divorce the t-case.
