Question Transfer Case Fluid

How do you check and fill the fluid in the transfer case of a 1993 F-150? What kind of fluid do you use?

Thanks

I believe you stick your finger in the fill hole and you should feel some, if not top up with regular Mercon, not Mercon V. It should be Mercon anyways, it is in the 2000's that I know, but check you're owners manual, or wait till others chime in here. Ususally the transfer case is not much to worry about.

Mercon ATF works just fine. Bout two quarts.

Undo the fill plug first incase you strip it out and your not stranded with an empty 1356.

I replaced the stupid square hole aluminum junk with some brass pipe plugs from home depot.

If yours are stripped like mine were on the 88, you can take a scrap of steel stock and grind it down to pound in. Heck, I'll sell ya the custom made plug removal unit for a sweetheart of a deal.

How do you get the fluid in there, take a mouth full and blow it in through a straw?

I use a device called a suction gun which is just a grease gun with a different end on it. Bout ten bucks at a tool store. You could also use an old turkey squirter.

Easy refill

Use a small funnel and attach to it a section of plastic hose (got mine from tractor supply) Hang the funnel in the space between the back of the cab and top of bed, snake the plastic hose down between the cab and bed into the fill hole and fill ----works great

I did the brass pipe plugs from home depot. Work great! Thanks adrianspeeder.
Used Valvoline MAX LIFE full synthetic, DEX/MERC, MERCON LV Multi-Vechicle ATF
