towing with a 5.4 automatic

Hi,

I didnt find it so..

I'm want to buy a 5.4V8 from 2001 over here in belgium.

But how do i know or there is a towing package on. Do i defenitly need a towing package or is just the lockout of the overdrive enough?

I gonna tow a lot so

People here will need more info. What do you want to pull? How much does it weight? Do you have a hitch receiver, a 4-pin or 7-pin connector? You do not have to have a towing package. You can add the required equipment based on what you have and what you want to tow. If what you are towing is light like most in Europe you may not need much.

Howdy and welcome!

Towing package or not, I recommend the addition of the largest stacked plate style tranny cooler you can find.

Also, it is important for us to know what you will be towing and how often.

Thx.

I Will be towing about 3000KG till 3500KG (6613lbs till 7716lbs) will look how much lbs that is. 2 times a week or more.

at thi moment there is no hitch at the back so i think it has nver towed. I doe see a 4 pins connector at the left side of the truck when you are behind him.

I didn't know what that was.

Ok, thats a good sized trailer for a F-150, but used to do much bigger before I got the F-250 no problem.

Get the frame mounted reciever on there properly sized to the load, and I also reccomend getting your trailer with a weight distributing setup. This levels out the truck and is worth the extra money.

The four pin connector is able to do brake, taillights, and turn signals. Better trailers have a seven pin connector that also have reverse lights, trailer brakes, and a charge wire if the trailer has a battery. I highly suggest trailer brakes and a good controller in the cab to go with it.

Now the other part, tranny cooling. You can't go too big here. I'd replace the dinky stock cooler with mega stacked plate style cooler. And if you wanna go all out, add a tranny temp gauge. You're lookin at a 2K dollar tranny rebuild if you overheat it so I think 150bucks ain't too bad to keep it cool.

Of course you being where you are, I have no idea parts availability or what you/local shops are comfortable with doing. Whats the story over there? Are there lots of Fseries trucks? Hows the weather?

the trailers here work wit a system that you have to push in to brake.
each trailer above 750kg need to have such a system.

not with air.

parts are very difficult over here.

When there are 1000 cars maybe 5 of them are a ford f 150.

Thats a reason not to buy.

I believe the factgory tow package will have a hitch receiver & electrical connection already installed, so that's your first clue...though they can also be added aftermarket. At any rate, if it lacks these then it also lacks the factory tow package.

As noted above, I'd also recommend an aftermarket trans cooler. They are cheap and easy to install.

Given those loads, you should also consider gears. If it's a 4x2 with stock tires, 3.73 at least, though I think 4.10s would be better. And since it rains a lot in Europe, some type of limited-slip as well.

it's a 4x4.

at this moment there is nothing like a towing package installed.

No reciever. A 4 pins connector at the back.

So a have to mount a bigger oil coller at the transmission and a bigger oil pan

And then i shouldn't expext problems

Just a transmission cooler, something like one of these:

I run the one with a fan, there are several different types, each with their own advantages.

No oil cooler is offered with the towing package but many use synthetic engine oil , a 6/7 quart oil capacity is standard ).

I have a 2001 supercrew ( 4X2 )) with the tow package. You get a heavy duty (larger) battery , 7 pin electric plug , trans cooler, factory hitch and 3.55 axle . Also the 5.4 comes with a larger axle 9.5 vs 8.8

As has been said a week link is the transmission cooler it's barely adequate , go larger.

Another week link is the rear suspension , its sprung to light for serious towing. To tow your weights a weight distributing hitch is a must .

I tow 4500# and find a 3.55 axle to be just adequate on level roads so yes a larger ratio is needed in your case .

All previous postings are quite correct . Good Luck

I tow a camper at around 6500lbs with the stock towing package with no problems. On the flats the tranny runs around 160F and on the hills around 180F I do have a fan on it ( the tranny cooler) so if i see a little hotter i can turn in on, as far as the oil temp goes i NEVER seen above 210F.

I also have the edge unit and has a few gauges to look at
