E4OD no low gear
Hey all,
I would really appreciate all of your help in narrowing down my problem with my 1993 F150 5.0 E4OD.
First Problem:
It slips going forward unless I pull it down to low gear on the column and then it only seems to go into second gear, but takes off without any hesitation or slipping from there, and shifts fine when I place the shifter back in drive once I get moving.
Second Problem:
Probably unrelated but I don't have any speedometer either. Odometer seems to be working.
I will appreciate anyone who is willing to help.

Fuses
Thanks for the reply,
I checked all of the fuses and haven't found anything that sticks out like oh yea that's the problem. The truck has high miles so I'm pretty sure I will need to pull the tranny, just wanted all the input of any thing else I could check before the R & R.
Thanks,
Sam

Easy fix!
Root cause of both problems is the VSS sensor on the rear diff. Unbolt and clean off. I'll bet a doughnut you'll be goin back good. Other things that usually are a giveaway is a non working cruse, flashing ABS light, and a flashing OD light.
Very well worth the 10 minutes to check out.

Vss
Adrian,
Thanks for the input on the VSS and yes it did get the speedometer back/ABS light off, but I am still taking off in a higher gear than first with a rougher than expected engagement in reverse. The truck says 158000 so I probably need to pull the unit and go through it. It's been a while since I rebuilt a trans and then most of my experiance is with TH350/400 on GM's so I would appreciate any help on problem areas for this unit, don't want to miss anything and have to do it again.
thanks.

New Problems
I added some Lucas trans oil treatment and now have all my gears, don't ask me how. It still seems to be running out in second and not wanting to shift into drive. It shifts into overdrive fine. I am going to change the fluid tomorrow with mercon and add another Lucas treatment. My question, why did this happen and will it last?

Could go for years, or could quit next week. Do the flush and roll the dice.

Check your lever switch on the transmission. I think some call it the MLP or something like that. I was having trouble with mine after a fluid and filter change and it was loose. I had a problem with it not ever going down into first gear but after that it started working right. You may also need to check to make sure you have enough fluid, being that adding the treatment made it come back to life.
