Help! Tranny shifts hard

I have a 1988 F150 with a 302. I just finished with an engine swap and finally got everything running right while it is sitting still. Get ready to drive it fully expecting it to be able to get up and go. I put it in drive and it barely even moves. With the gas pedal all the way down, it has very slow accelleration, and takes a while for it to shift into second. As soon as it does shift into second at around 35 mph, the entire truck shakes horribly, and won't go an faster than 40 mph. I am completely puzzeled. The transmission fluid level is full, I have ran several searches in the forums, and have found similar problems, but not quite the same thing. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

What is the history of the transmission? Was it in good operational order before the swap? Which transmission is in use?

Have you verified the plug wires and firing order are correct?

I am not too sure of the history of the transmission, but it is a C4 transmission with 4X4 that was in perfect condition before the swap. The plug wires are numbered correctly and in the correct order according to the book.

You just say engine swap so I'm assuming it is the origional tranny. That would be either the C6 or AOD. Is it a three or four speed?

If it is the C6 i'd say you didn't hook up the vacuum line to the modulator, and if it is the AOD your TV cable isn't adjusted right.
