gear question

Hey im just wondering how much it cost to regear my truck. i have an 01' screw 4x4 5.4 v8 and i thought it would have 3.73 but i look underneath and it only has 3.55 and i was planning lifting and heard it 1 is better for lifted trucks so the strain is not present 2 ive also heard from lots 35's dont require regearing at all the options open but it does not need it. for both axles i heard around $800 but does anyone know how they regear them

could it be a do it yourself project feedback will be appricaited.

Well it would cost about $800...... for the gear sets . to have a pro do it should be somewhere in the ballpark of $900 to $1300 per diff , depending on what brand you want and where you get them. you can do it youself but you've got to have a dial indicator to get your backlash set properly, not only that but you also have to reshim the diff. doing it youself you really should have someone help you that's done it befor.
they regear the axle by removing the diff cover, sliding out the axles, removing the differential and the pinion gear. then swaping out the gearsets,
reinstalling everything, getting the gears to mesh properly and refill it w/fluid. sounds simple but no!
If it was me I would put my wallet (which would be starting to cry right now) away and just live w/ the lower gear ratio, the one you have now and the one you want is not a huge difference, only about 1/4 rotation of the driveshaft. whereas your driveshaft has to make 3.55 rotations for every 1 of the axles right now the new ones would be 3.73 to 1. you would be getting a mechanicle advantage but not a huge one.... unless you tow something.

the parts alone would cost about $200-300 per axle for the ring and pinions and install kits, depending on location install will runs $200-500 for labor alone, so you are looking at $400-800 per axle for parts and labor, if you have never done a RP install before it is something best left to a mech. with 35" 4.56 would put you close to the 3.73 ratio you would have with stock tires, good luck
