Unhappy Please Help !!!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 Super Crew, 4.6 with the 4r70w transmission.
Today while driving home the speedometer started jumping from 0 - 80 and higher then quit workng all together. The odometer also quit working and went to - - - - - - - - -. The overdrive light in the shift handle started blinking and thats when I noticed that I had no gears. I stopped the truck and started out again slowly. Again no noises were ever heard or clunks etc.
The truck had 1-3 gears but shifted fast and tach out. No overdrive. I was a few miles from a family members home so i attempted to limp it there. I almost made it but hit a red light. When i went to pull out I had no gears again but I manually shifted it into 2nd and was able to make it slowly to a parking space. NO FLUID on ground, no smoke, no check engine codes no noises nothing!!!!!!! And yes I did check the tranny fluid and it was right on.
I'm supposed to leave on vacation, pulling my JUST PURCHASED CAMPER, in three weeks and need to get this thing fixed. If anyone has a clue please let me know. E-mail me direct if you want at mcornell@iup.edu

If the overdrive light was flashing, there should be continous codes stored in memory. That's where I'd start.

And I bet the code points too a VSS, the speed sensor, failure. It's a 30 dollar part on the rear diff you can change yourself in 15 minutes. Any autozone can scan you for free then sell the part if that comes up.

On your truck, the speedo, odo, and tranny shift points, and ABS system use the VSS to tell them how fast the truck is going.

Worst case however is metal bits floating around your rear diff, causing the VSS to read wrong. Metal bits are never a good thing.

Day two.

Went to pick up the truck today. Started it up and the damb thing worked fine. The OD worked and the light was not blinking. Also the speedometer and odometer both worked. I drove it home, about ten miles, and every thing seems fine ??????????????? So what was the problem in the first place. A sensor ?????? Should I take it to a shop anyway? I feel very uncomfortable with taking it on a trip in fear of it breaking down again.
