Torque Converter Bad - What Else?

My 1998 Expedition is in the shop for transmission repairs (1998 5.4L 4x4 160,000 miles).

It was kicking a code. Slip between the engine and transmission.

The shop said it was the torque converter.

They are putting a new torque converter in for $1100.

They are asking me if I want to look at the back end of the transmission (another $400).

A total rebuild would be $3000. Since it was running okay when I took it in. Appeared to shift fine, just the light came on.

I am leaning towards just going with a torque converter.

Any advice?

Thanks,
John

Your getting ripped.

I would get the truck and take it somewhere else to put a torque converter in. No need to go through the rest of it at only 160,000 miles

1100 for a new torque converter? I hope that is a really good performance converter because if that is a stock converter you are getting ripped...hard.

For a complete rebuild with a brand new converter, I am paying $1600 after tax. The prices ranged from $1600-$2200 for all that. I would say you are getting ripped. Chances are you don't need a performance converter anyway.

I got a total performance rebuild for less that $2500 from Level 10, no less.

$1100 was the transmission dismount. Trouble shooting. Putting the torque converter and the transmission back in.

I'm in CA where everything costs more!

You can find full rebuilt 4r70w's on eBay for $750 or even high performance, heavy duty rebuilds in the $1500 range.

I don't suggest dealing with the ebay transmissions, when they do give specs they list parts that don't build a good transmission. When they don't it's because the stuff they are using is garbage.
