How to identify your transmission

How do I know what kind of transmission I have? I have a 2003 Supercrew 4x4, 5.4 automatic. Is there a tag on the transmission like the rear end or do you just have to look it up? Thanks.

AFAIK all f-150's excluding lightnings since 98 or 99 have the 4r70w.

There should actually be a sticker saying 4r70w, but ya, aside from 5 speed manuals, 4r70w's are in all, 4r100 are in Lightnings. The new tranny is a
4r75w or something like that.

Not necessarily I would check the sticker on the door, I have a 2000, 5.4, 4x4, Super-cab with a 4R100.

[Transmission Codes]
U — 4-speed automatic (AODEW/4R70W).
E — 4-speed automatic (4R100).
7 — 4-speed automatic (4R100).

Do you have the 7700 Package? Could you get a pic of your tranny and door sticker? It's not that I don't believe you, I just want to add it to the tranny info page as I've never seen a truck with your combo.

No 7700 group. It did come with a factory tow package, I don't know if that matters. I could not get a good pic of the tranny but I know it is a not the same as the one on my 97 2wd 4.6 which was smaller and had a different shaped pan. I have sean pictures of a 4R100 and it looks the same as my tranny.

Here are the engine/transmission options from 2001 a brochure it should be the same as 2000. The description of the 5.4's tranny "w/electronic four-speed automatic" is different than all the other tranny's. I always assumed it was referring to the 4R100, in others words all 5.4's came with the 4R100.

- 4.2L EFI V6 engine with five-speed manual O/D transmission (NA on SuperCab 4x4)
- 4.2L EFI V6 engine with four-speed automatic O/D transmission (NA on SuperCab 4x4)
- 4.6L EFI V8 engine with five-speed manual O/D transmission (standard on SuperCab 4x4)
- 4.6L EFI V8 engine with four-speed automatic O/D transmission (standard on SuperCrew)
- 5.4L EFI V8 engine w/electronic four-speed automatic O/D transmission (optional on all models)

Did you read the whole thread before you posted? Look on your door sticker.

Crawl under and look at the trans oil pan.

4R70W (but yours won't have the drain plug):

4R100 (note the "Utah" shape):

2 types

According to this my 95 F150 Auto 2WD 302 can have 2 types of transmissions. Not sure if it helps but mine has the OD button on the shifter. Can you tell me if I'm mistaken or simply what tranny I have please? Thanks

Look at your pan. You have either a 4R70W or a E4OD. E4OD was replaced with the 4R100 around 1999 but it's essentially the same transmission. You most likely have the 4R70W.
