O/D light flash, code P0781

Yesterday O/D off light started to flash. Turn off engine, restart and light stays off. Drive for a bit around town and the light comes back on. Speedo works. Shifts OK, but a little firm into 2nd while braking once light is on. Normal driving above stop and go speeds everything feels fine. I can turn off and on the O/D even after the light is on.

Truck and tranny is stock. Tranny serviced (flushed) 3 months ago. Fluid level is good, color is great.

Had the code read at Aamco. P0781, 1-2 shift malfunction.
Their price, $135 for parts and labor to replace the 1-2 shift solonoid (I can't work in my Townhouse driveway). They informed me it could be a false code and that it actually could be the intermediates slipping. Their estimate if it needs rebuild, $1400 and no vasoline. I think they smelled a whale and tried to steer me that direction. I told them "I'd rather drive into a ditch and leave it there."

I drove back to work, not allowing it to shift into 1st. I shifted into 2nd as I slowed to a stop and started off very easy. After 25mph, put it in D and drove like normal. Not allowing the tranny into 1st, the light never came on.

Sound like a bad shift solonoid? I hope so.

Not a bad solonoid. Not yet anyway.

Took it to Aamco to get the code. They also cleared it for me (keeps my radio station presets). I drove it without letting it shift into first, the light stayed off. I should have driven it normally.

I took it back the next day to have the 1-2 solonoid changed out. They drove it with their electronic do-dads hooked up. No code, no faults found.

Looks like my tranny threw a code but is still operating ok for now. I've been driving the snot out of it for a day now and no flashing lights, no codes, no problems.

Whew. Dodged a bullet for the time being. No money spent, not even for the diagnostics.

Your code can be caused by internal tranny problems. The code is for no engine RPM drop when 1-2 shift is commanded by the PCM. Most likely a 1-2 shift solenoid that is sticking. Changing the solenoid may fix the problem for awhile but may stick again caused by clutch material that has flaked off the clutch disc. You could try to flush the tranny and see if that helps first.
