How much to swap my gears?

I just bought a new set of 4:10 gears for my ride. It's a 2x4, and I pondered reading up on it and tackling the install myself, but it's not worth making a mistake and cooking my rear end. How much should I expect to pay a shop to swap out my gears out back? Do I take it to a tranny shop, or any shop that says they can do it?

Just got mine back

If you go through a dealer or regular gear shop, I dont know how much they would charge. I found the gear tech at a Ford dealership who did work on the side and it cost me $150 for him and approx $50 for misc parts. Warning you may have problems getting the speedometer right. Since 4.10 wasnt offered in4x2, 3.73 is best computer would accept. I have the Edge in mine and will try today to get it to accept the 4.10s.

hmm....

Wait, dumb question. If I have a 12 bolt cover, does that mean I have the 9.75" ... not the 8.8. I was told I had the 8.8, but now I'm confused. Crap.

4.6 is 8.8
5.4 is 9.75
4.0 I think 8.8

Look at the little tag on the rear cover to see which rearend you have.
A gearswap complete with new Ford gears, bearings, seals, comsumables, tax etc runs about U$800. Subtracting for your furnished parts it would be about U$500 to U$600. Less if you reuse the old bearings etc.
Best places to get it done are racing shops and shops that specialize in trannys and rears (that sounds just so wrong...)
