Tranny Problems Please Help!!!!!!!!

I currently own a 97 expedition, while driving the other day I heard something break (sounded like I ran over a piece of metal). So I pulled over, and I didnt really see anything hanging. So I started driving again, but notice a sound change when I would accelerate. The sound got louder when I took my foot off the gas. I then realize something wasn't right. Well to make I long story short my transmission went out. I was very confused because, my SUV has never shown any symptoms of transmission problems.

I can put it in gear, but it sounds like I'm in Neutral; when I press on the gas. There is no fliud linking at all, and the fluid level and color is fine. I also noticed when I put my Expedition in "Park" it continues to move like I was in "neutral" but when I apply the emergency brake it stops.

Does anyone have a clue what may happened?

Again, My Expedition wont move, and I wanted to get some input before getting it towed to a trans shop

Thanks In Advance

Howdy and welcome. Sure sounds like you broke something in the rear end of the tranny or your driveline. What engine do you have? What does the code say under trans on the door jam sticker? 4x4?

Sounds like you lost a u-joint, driveshaft, or something in the rear end. I'd first inspect the driveshaft and u-joints.. those would be the cheapest things to fix too!

When I've lost trannies you usually still have park, so I somehow doubt it's your tranny.

Is the truck 4 wheel drive? If so your transfer case is probably in neutral.

I was able to move the truck in 4wd, so it appears that I broke something in the rear end. In 4wd the truck jerks while driving, I didnt go far just to a different parking spot. I was also able to move in reverse. I'm having someone look further into this on Friday. Any suggestions

Thanks,

Kevin

Yep, I'd say it has to be either the rear driveline or diff, unless there's something in the transfer case that would do that.
