What is my Clutch and Tranny Doing?!?!

Hey All - new guy here. Having an issue with my 91 F150. As I was coming home today, the tranny started to make a very quiet noise (5 speed manual tranny). As I got off the freeway, I realized my clutch pedal had sunk almost all the way to the the floor. I was actually able to continue to use the clutch, but it only has about a 1/2 inch of travel. Very strange, as if a spring somewhere had broken, but I am able to still shift into all the gears, its just that the clutch pedal dropped. Any ideas?

Howdy and welcome!

Could be the clutch master cylinder (not too bad), slave cylinder (would have to pull the tranny), hydro lines, or the pedal linkage.

my dad had a similar problem. come to find out it was the slave cylinder. them about 80k miles later it went out again. the guy told us that once the original goes out the new ones don't last as long. one of our good friends had the same problem. he went through three slave cylinders. then he sold the truck. i hope for your sake thats not the problem with yours.

Be careful with the mechanic and/or dealer trying to fix this. These systems are apparently hard to properly bleed and without the air out of the system, they fail repeatedly.

First check the fluid level in your clutch master cylinder. If it is not low you have a clutch problem. Try pumping the pedal to see if it comes back up, this is a sure sign of a leak. If it is low, most likely senerio, your hydraulic system is leaking. The most often location for the leak is the slave cylinder. To be sure you will have to trace the whole system to determine where the leak is coming from. Start at the master cylinder and work your way down to the slave.

Mondomo, by any chance, you don't live in or around Louisiana, do you?
