Safe RPM for stock converter question???
I have a little different problem.
I have been working to get my truck to perform but had a problem I could not figure out. This weekend I installed a new ignition kit with LiveWires and Screamin' Demon Coil Packs. Now suddenly the truck pulls so hard with the blower that it will pull all the way to 6000 RPM in first. The motor is built so it will take it but I have a stock, recently rebuilt torque converter. What is the safe RPM range for this converter? 1997 F150 4.6 4R70W.
I did try to use the search feature but cannot find what I am looking for.
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks dirtyd0g, I would love to get one of your TCs but it is just not in the budget right now. At least I got the Valve Body spacer and the modified rear housing from you.
I guess I have a problem. Do I need anti-ballooning or just a good torque converter? Is the TC for the 2003 4R70Ws able to withstand 6000 RPM runs?

Now, I wouldn't give it much merit, but I have spun the one in my gator up to 5750 without sending it packing. Mikes setting up my programming for a shift point of 5450, so I would assume that up to 5500 at WOT would have to be acceptable.
Now, if you see it the way I do, you spin it till it blows and thats the excuse to get a bigger, better unit in explanation to the wife! Of course, this is all budget permitting. Or if you're like me and do it yourself, its motivation permitting, unless you like to walk.

A balloon plate will help some. If rpm is what you are after the marauder converters can handle over 6000 rpm. I don't suggest towing on the smaller converter however. Adding a balloon plate to a stock converter is a good idea but anymore for the same cost you can go to billet. The first time you go over 5400 the converter isn't going to explode but the longer you do it the more the converter will spread. When it spreads enough the metal spacer in it that rides against the stator cap will fall out of place and start rattling into fins. When all the fins are totally gone your converter and your transmission will be worthless even as cores. If you want the better stock converter I suggest one from a 4r75w they were furnace brazed and had a bearing. They will still spread out at 5400, but they won't self destruct as bad they will just get loose and noisy.
