Odometer is not working at all.

It was intermittent a while (like a couple of weeks). But now it's dead. I cleaned the 2-wire contact at the sensor but it didn't help.

Previously, I was advised to remove the sensor and check the plastic wheel. Let me ask you a question before I do that. Will transmission fluid gush out once the sensor is removed? Or just dripping?

Thanks.

If the engine isn't running you shouldn't get more than a drop or two when you remove the sensor.

The plastic gear was okay. What's next likely cause? The sensor itself? Thanks.

Do you have the green # digital? Mine sometimes fades depending on the temp in the cab. There was a lengthy write up in here a few years ago on how to fix it, because to replace means replacing guage cluster apparently.

97s and 98s are mechanical.

is it just the odometer or is it odometer and speedometer? Cuz mine went 2 years ago in my 97, gear was there but then fell apart after checking it. Sensor also failed but due to wire beeing cut. Gear is around $2, labor to replace it was close to $200.

Do a search here

There is an entry for a repair for a common problem on these trucks with digital odometers it has to do with soldering a cracked circiut board behind the guage cluster----if I remember it is not a complicated fix and clear instructions are here somewhere.

I have the same issue, it's a bad cold solder joint behind the instrument cluster. I haven't attempted to fix it yet (I'm too lazy to pull it apart)

Good luck

Mine is mechanical just like yours. I can hear clicking sound that goes up and down in frequency with the speed of the pickup. Since the speedometer is working well, it must not be the sensor or wire. Am I right?

I will call the dealer and get a replacement gear. I have another vehicle so I can get the dashboard opened up and work at my own pace. I will report back to you folks. Thanks.

Again, 97's and 98's have a different odometer and a different common odometer problem than the 99's+

If the gear driven cable is ok off the tranny, you need to check the back of the dash to make sure that the connection is good there too. If your speedo is working and no ABS light, the VSS sensor is fine. VSS also runs the odo on the 99+ trucks.

I called a dealer for the gear. But they said there is no serviceable part in odometer. The whole cluster needs to come out and be replaced with the odometer preset to match my vehicle.

Did you get the wheel for $2 from a junk yard? Will they seel the gear only? When I called a local junk yard, they were selling the whole gauge cluster for less than $100. I am not sure if I can talk them into selling just the gear.

Doesn't the ABS use the sensor on the rear diff? AFAIK, the speedo is run off the tail shaft/t-case, but the ABS is picked up off the ring gear tone ring.

I'm with you all the way on the connections being the problem though. It's possible something went ka-flooey in the cluster, but not likely.

Post 2 lists places to get the gears, though they seem pricey!

Please keep us posted. I hardly drive my truck anymore but I need to get this fixed.
