M5OD Making noise going into second gear.

Just started today. It doesn't grind going in at all, but it does make a weird noise. Only on second gear. Could this be the syncro? If anyone has any experience with this, could you let me know? I also had a magazine that I purchased recently that showed how to rebuild this transmission, but with my luck, I have not found it again.

Could be.

Whats the milage on the truck? Take the 15 minutes to change the fluid with some fresh Mercon ATF. A hand pump makes it easy to fill.

Heres a pic to help.

I will, I checked to see if it was full, and it was. I'll change the fluid later today. Short of pulling the tranny and removing the top cover, I probably won't figure out the problem.

Edit, and there is 305500Km on the transmission, I was pretty much expecting something to go wrong around this time.

don't worry abought it....manual trans with out Syncro's were built for 30+ years, practice and you will not need the clutch to change gears, I had a 77F-100 with a 4sp manual and a 302, syncros were gone on it when I got the truck, 1st gear was a non syncro stump puller, only problem I had was breaking the clutch rod in half, your transmisson still has lot's of life...

Replaced the fluids, still makes the noise, just not as loud. Also, two small needle like fragments came out, nothing super, just two.

Its weird that it only makes the noise in 2nd. And only about half way up on the rpms too. I might pull it out and remove the top cover this week.

The things that fell out are probably fragments from a screwed up syncro

My question is, if its the syncro, should it not make the noise in all the gears? Not just second?

a bad syncro will only make a grinding niose when being put into gear my second gear syncro is bad to and it only grind doing a fast high rpm 1st to 2nd shift other than that its fine and theres no noise while driving

if its making noise all the time in 2nd its a bearing and the needles that fell out could have been part of it also stycros are made of brass so if those needles are steel which they probobly are there definitly not a part of the syncro

To best describe the peices that fell out, they were just slivers, one about an inch in length, and the other about 3/4s of an inch. That is all that came out, so figuring when a bearing goes, it usually comes out in chunks of various sizes, same with teeth on gears. The peices were also steel. Its hard to really say without pulling the transmission out.

Its pretty much time for a new transmission, because I dont plan on putting that M5OD behind the 351W I'm building up. Considering the current shape the transmission is in, it would be a waste of time.

I had a problem with my top plate on my tranny and i thought i was going to have 2 drop the tranny but i had an acess plate in the floor and you can get to the top plate and remove it without dropping the tranny. I dont know if this will help anyone but it sure helped me.
