Most major auto parts have a code reader and will read the code, for free.
They will look up the code, tell you what it is and you can determine if it's something you want to tackle yourself or take it in.

Ford will usually charge you $60-$85 to read the code.

Turn your headlights on and disconnect the battery. Wait about 5 mins and reconnect. If the CEL comes back on, then have it code tested.
It could be just about anything. I don't have the convenience of a Pep Boys or any other place that can run a code for me, nor can I have a code-reader shipped because it is an electronic component, since I live in Germany, so I ended up troubleshooting components one by one. It ended up being my EGR valve, which was clogged from build up.
Good luck!

I have 34,000 miles on my 04 and decided to change the tranny fluid. Used the Mercon V. It is the "b" code tranny, or, so I am learning, the 4W75e transmission. The fluid looked fairly clean coming out, but to me changing the oil BEFORE saves a lot of afterward problems.
Ford might say that this new tranny is a 'lifetime' unit, but I notice that it never does say how long it thinks the 'lifetime' of the tranny is!!!!
'Course, the more tranny's we buy, the more money Ford makes.
As to the person with the engine light.
Mine came on and it turned out that the shifting lever was just not 'exactly' in the drive position. I turned off the truck, turned on the truck and pushed the shifter and light has been off ever since.
(Just one instance) FYI
