slipping

Tranmission is slipping going into first gear. Only when the tranny is cold. This morning while going hunting and in 4WD it was worse, but it was cold. Past first gear it is fine. I searched the forum for similar symtoms found one post with similar symptons, but no replys.

My fear is that I will take it to tranny shop, and the automatic response will be rebuild or remanufacture, when it might be the speed sensor or linkage. Can any one give me some diagonis tips?

Cheak you trans fluid level and look to see if its still red. Make shure it dosent smell burnt! If its low and dark and smell burnt your looking at a rebuild or Reman. If thats all good then you can start by looking to see if you have any codes set in your vehecles computer. Then cheak Trans Line PSI and see what you have but with that kind of milage you might be looking at a worn out trans. But correct any electrical concern first before you start pulling out that trans! It might be just something like that! Dont let the concern pass you by it might just leave you some where! hehehehe

Thanks for your reply.

The tranny fluid level reads "do not add" (near the top of the scale) when it is cold. The "cold" level is near the bottom of the scale. Does that mean I have too much fluid? The slipping problem just started, and I changed the fluid several months before.

The fluid looks new. I have changed it 3 times, and used Amsoil every time. I did not change the filter the last time. I beleive I read somewhere that you dont need to change it everytime.

I have not gotten a "check engine" light. Will there be codes?

I will research my shop manual to troubleshoot the electircal.

Worse case scenario - will the Lucas Transmission Conditioner buy me some time before I have to swap out? I know that takes a crystal ball.

I have already started to check into reman tranny's. Jasper seems the way to go. I will so the swap work myself. Anythoughts on Jasper or doing the swap yourself?

I hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does there are much better alternatives than Jasper. Message or email me at indymre@aol.com .
