Generic ATF is it OK?

With the cost of mercon at nearly $4 a quart and the Autozone and O'reilly brands at less than $2. Is the name brands really any better?...and/or is the generic OK to use. Using in E40D, in 1993 F150 S/C 351 that is getting a little shudder. Goiing to change and put some ShudderFixx in it.
Thanks

If the 2000dollar rebuild price of an E4OD is worth less than a 2 dollar savings per quart, go for it. I would shy away from additives as well.

Anything that meets the correct specs will be fine. WallyWorld has it in their Tech brand for around $1.50. In the last year, my purchases of REGULAR mercon from the Ford house were $1.75, $1.89, $2.16 and $2.29. The $2.16 was last week. If I was paying $4.00 for regular mercon, I'd step up and get the Mobil 1 synthetic.

Pennzoil OK?

Walmart has there in house brand for $5.22 per gallon and the pennzoil for $8.12 per gallon. That is the Mercon-Dexton.....would the pennzoil be a good choice.
Thanks

The expensive "mercon" fluid is needed for the new 5r110 transmission. The E4OD just uses merconIII which is the cheap stuff to get any of it that meets specs is okay I get it at a nearby wholesale store (sams club) for less than 13 a case.
