Mercon or Mercon V

My 2001 F150 requires Mercon V. I generally have it serviced at Ford.

Well I took it to the local quick stop and the flushed it and replaced it with Regular Mercon and then poured in a bottle of Chem-Tool crap that is supposed to turn Mercon to Mercon V.

My question is - did I just get screwed? Should I take it to ford and have it flushed again. Ford generally screws the hell out of me for about $160 to flush out my tranny.

I read up on the Chem-Tool crap that they poured into it and it supposedly has the friction modifiers in it that differenciates between regular Mercon and Mercon V.

Anyway - any tranny experts want to comment

I think I'd have a little talk with the local quick stop

I would insist that they use the proper fluid and I would have it done now!! The wrong fluid can quickly cause problems. there are warnings and instructions to only use mercon5 if an addative was enough Ford would be selling it instead of having to stock two fluids. Hopefuly you have a converter drain to change all the fluid,The $160 Ford change is way less than a rebuild, you only get what you pay for.

Yeah, I'd call the dealer and see what they say. If they say "change it NOW" then go to the place that did it and insist they do it right on their dime.

It is legit to do that. The oil change shop would have a large liability issue and have been stung by now if it was not..
However if your not comfortable with it then have it changed.
Ever notice how small a stock or none at all the auto stores have in Mercon V?
Only Ford uses it.

There is an ATF out there called Multi-vehicle ATF. IT is approved for use is basically all cars, minus a few here and there. It works for old and new fords. I run it in my Navigator (98) and my Aviator (05). I also had it in my 5 speed stang some time ago

The Ford service manual and owners manual states do not use any universal designation fluids. Use ONLY Mercon5 That's enough for me. I would rather leave the old fluid in it than change to a lessor or wrong fluid.
