Drive Indicator in wrong place
1998 F150 with a little less than 100000 miles.
This weekend after putting the pickup in park, we noticed that the drive indicator (not sure what it's really called) didn't move over to the "P". In park, the marker is on the "R", in reverse, it's on the "N" and so on and so forth.
Two questions regarding this issue:
1 - how can this be fixed?
2 - is this possibly a sign of transmission problems?
Thanks!

I don't know what causes that, perhaps a stretched cable? But, I have seen cars with that problem drive 10's of thousands of miles like that without any tranny issues. Just remember when going into gear until you fix it that the indicator is incorrect!
If you look under the dash, by the steering column, you will notice a small knurled **** with a small diameter cable running thru it. This is how you adjust the indicator. Just turn the **** and see if you can adjust it to read properly.
the same thing happened on our 98 f250 ld. twice
i have heard this was a common problem on the 97 to 99 or so model years.
it has been fixed for over a year now and hope it stays that way- dont know for sure what the dealer did to fix it tho.
