aftermarket transmission cooler
i have purchased and plan to put a larger transmission cooler on my truck. first off is this a wise thing to do? also were should i cut the lines and mount the cooler. i know that at least on my year model the trans cooler is located in the radiator my question would be is it wise to disconect te original and put an after market in its place. i like to drive on the beach alot and would like to help my truck as much as possible.
Thanks Dan

Cut into the "return" line right under the radiator location where the lines go back to the trans.
Use suitable fittings to the new aux cooler mounted ahead if the A/C condenser.
Only certain conditions might warrent bypassing the radiator internal cooler.
If you do that, cold weather will cause the trans to shift somewhat stiff and delay overdrive operation until the fluid gets warmed up enough.
The stock arrangement actually heats the trans fluid by the radiator coolant coming up in temp before the trans does.

Ditto above, you want the stock cooler and add the biggest one you can find. Since you are concerned and are doing all that work anyway, I would throw in a temp gauge so you know exactly what is going on.

Woohoo!!! post #300!!! Beside that.. The aux cooler is a good idea. Instead of cutting the lines, hayden makes a fitting kit for adding trans coolers. #395 is the part number I think. Got it at pep boys here in Nashvegas. I would put the cooler in line where it comes out the bottom of the drivers side of the radiator. The kit gives you hose barbs for 3/8" transmission hose to plumb everything. Most good coolers will come with all this stuff to hook it up.
Hope that helps.
