Transmission names

Can someone explain to me what the names of the transmissions(4r70w, e4od, and a4od) stand for it probably very apparent but i cant figure it out. I would thank someone for this because it would help me with puchasing a new 6 inch lift kit for my truck.

I am not trying to be disagreeable but you won't be any farther ahead by knowing more than what your ID sticker says your truck has from the factory.
The lift kit should have been engineered for the truck without the buyer having that concern.
As for the different transmissions, now there are a lot of different ones but only a few used in these modern 1/2 ton trucks.
The 4w70/w used to be known as the AODE in two versons then add two wheel drive and 4 wheel drive to that yet.
I believe the 4r100 used to be known as the E4OD.
You should have one of these two models unless a changeover was done.

Ford auto tranny history.... for late model trucks.

C6: bullet proof heavy duty three speed auto tranny. Not computer controlled but will last forever. Used up till 96 on the heavy duty trucks.

E4OD: (Electronic 4speed OverDrive), smarter son of the C6. Shares many internal parts and is a pretty strong runner. Started in about 90 on the bronco and Fseries and went to 97. Put behind the 300six, 351V8, 460V8, 7.3L IDI, 7.3L powerstroke. Special option on the 302V8. Trans code door sticker of E

4R100: (4speed + Reverse 100(x10)lb ft of torque). Replacement for the E4OD and used in the Fseries, expy, excur, and lightining behind the 5.4V8, 6.8V10, and 7.3L powerstroke. Sometimes put behind the 4.6L

5R110: (5speed + Reverse 110(x10)lb ft of torque). AKA the torqshift behind the 6.0L powerstroke and now the 5.4 and 6.8 in the superdutys. Trans code door sticker of B

Those are the heavydutys, and now for the lightdutys

AOD: (Automatic OverDrive) Mid 80s development in the Fseries and bronco and was put behind the 300six and 302V8, sometimes (rarely)behind the 351, but not the 351HO. Not computer controlled and used up to 93 when replaced by...

4R70w: (4speed + reverse 70(x10)lb ft of torque). Direct decendant of the AOD, but now computer controlled and put behind the 300six, 302V8, 4.2V6, and 4.6LV8. Sometimes behind the 5.4V8 in the half tons.

Also, the codes are as follows...

AOD = T
4R70w = U
E4OD = E
4R100 = E
5R110 = B

All these truck trannys have 4x2 versions with the tailshaft right there to hook a driveshaft too, or a 4x4 version with a mount for a transfer case. Can't be swapped unless major work is done internally and is usually not worth it.

So what do you have?

Also, just for others there is the M5OD-R2 which is the Mazda 5speed Overdrive. The -R1 goes behind the ranger and exploder, and the -R2 is in the F150s and broncos. Trans code M
