Question Chattering/Clanking Sound

I have a 01 F150 5.4 auto and when in gear and stopped I get a chattering or clanking sound that seems to come from the transmission or tourque converter area. Also the noise is not present when in park, but if I hold the brake and change to any gear it get the same noise. When I drive off the sound disappears and the truck drives just fine. Any suggestions as to what this may be? I've done a search but haven't found anything that quite resembles this symptom. Would appreciate any info from anyone out there who has had the same problem.

this problem just started happending today to me on my 2004 f150 4WD Auto, does anybody know what this could be?? it sounds like something getting getting drug inside the transmission every rotation. Also there is no noticable difference in driving performance although I have stopped driving the truck.

This one almost sounds like loose torque converter bolts or a cracked flexplate.

This one sounds like something different. Maybe a dying torque converter or failing hard part in the transmission.

Really hard to tell over the internet though. Most guesses end up being incorrect.

thats what i was thinking a loose torq. bolt sliding against something when engaged. Do you think it would be more worth while to pull the tranny or take it to a shop? If a shop what kind of cost do you think im going to incur? The truck only has 60k on it

If it's a loose nut then you can get to them through the inspection plate without having to pull anything.

i pulled the inspection plate ( the plate on the lower frontal part of the transmission with 2 bolts) and just all the bolts and the seemed fine. Do you think dropping the pan would be a worthwhile cause?? I really don't want to pull the tranny but if i have too..

I would start looking at the driveline to make sure nothing is loose. Check the universal joints and everything.

The only reason that I started at the front is because you said it sounded like it was coming from the transmission or torque converter area. Looks like it's time to work your way back now.
