Arrow Trans code PO741, TRANSMISSION TECHS! I NEED HELP!

2000 F150, 4.2L V6. 4R70W trans:
Been chasing the flashing overdrive indicator (in gear selection lever) for a while. Dealer said codes can't be read unless reading was done while light flashing. Today it started flashing again. Took it to a reliable local trans shop and had codes read with light still flashing. Code read "PO741 - torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off". What should I expect for repairs? Will it require a complete rebuild including torque converter or something less? Truck has 88K, should the trans be rebuilt completely if it has to be removed for repair any way? What about upgrades to improve tranny strength/reliability (I ocasionally pull a 16 ft bass boat to local lakes). Please, any sound advise will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Chad
Please note incorrect code (PO714) has been corrected to PO741. Brain fade...

Doesn't sound bad, sounds like an electrical problem which can be fixed with the trans in the truck. A 16 ft bass boat is not a lot of weight but you can put in a FTVB (search for it) in it easily for increased performance/reliablilty.

Also talk to several different trans shops to see which know how to trouble shoot it. Most shops just want to rebuild the entire thing.

88K miles, you should get 200K out of it after you fix the electrical problem. But hurry so you don't potentially wear other parts in the trans. For example if your torque converter clutch is not locking in with this problem you could potentially overheat it.
