Modified Hurst Short Throw!

Well I am at it again! Forever in search of the perfect mod. Here is what I did to the Hurst Short throw shifter. I heated up the top of the shifter and bent it forward. See 1st pic. This allows me to hold the shifter with my hand on it like the Hurst pistol grip shifter of old. See
2nd pic.

Hurst Hard Shifting

I put a Hurst shifter kit in my '99 flareside 4X2. I love the short thows but its hard getting it out of gear and into gear in all gears. I sense something to do with spring loading in shifter--is there some adjustment I can make? Its wearing out my shoulder.

Is your slave disengaging the clutch completely? This can make for a still shift feel. The Hurst needs a little more effort becasue of the geometry of the system. The pivot point is higher so you need to overcome the reduced mechanical advantage. Are you having trouble linging up the gears or is it the shift effort? The only thing that I know of that could be adjusted is the bias spring load. That is the side to side stiffness. I was told that there are four springs. Two on each side. You could remove one on each side.

Hurst shift problem

My problem is the effort takin in shifting--gears line up fine--its just that pushing it out of gear and into gear gives me a sore shoulder. I'm reasonably strong and fit but it just seems the added effort almost offset the shorter throw.
Maybe a pistol grip type lever would make it work better. The only thing I like better than a mod is a mod of a mod.

I noticed with mine that I was trying to pull it down when shifting from first to second and from third into fourth. I was trying to push it up when shifting from second to third and from fourth into fifth. When I bent it the way it is now I was now pushing it forward and pulling it backwards. Try cupping the ball like in my second picture to see if that makes it easier. The shifter ball is actually positioned further towards the rear of the truck. This new position may have placed the ball in a position that makes it difficult for you to push an pull on it.
Do you sit close to the wheel? Try moving the seat back about 2 notches. I am not suggesting that you drive with the seat back but just try shifting with the seat back to see how your shoulder lines up to the new position. If it feels better then I would suggest heating and bending the shifter like I did. This will move the ball back closer to the OEM position and may make it easier to shift.

If you're having a hard time shifting go back to the instructions. There is a section near the end that sells you how to adjust the "bias". I did this. It's a matter of removing two of the four springs (smaller ones) in the shifter. Give that a try, it might help.

One thing I noticed whe I had the shifter apart is that transmission fluid had leaked out from the seal on the new shifter. Anyone else seen this?
