Lightbulb Transmission Fluid

Recently I was reading a posting from cliles55 regarding transmission fluid.

I have 134,000 miles on my 2000 Lariat. I have had the transmission fluid changed three times in its lifetime. Recently, I have experienced some sluggish feeling in my transmission.

cliles55 wrote that we should be careful not to use anything other than what is printed in the owners manual. Mercon V

If the repair shop I use used a different fluid could that be the reason for my sluggish transmission? If I go back to Mercon V will the transmission react/operate like it should? Is there something else I should be focusing on? Are there tests that I can do to determine if the transmission is beginning to fail?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Dawg,
Read the last reply on this link:

I would bring my truck back to the shop that serviced it with the wrong fluid, if I knew that to be true, and inform them that I expect the fluid to be changed at no-cost (complete change - pan, cooler if installed, and torque converter) and that any future failure will be attributed to their negligence.

You can find some other threads that talk to Mercon vs Mercon V and, as I recall, what some of the effects can be.

Good luck, sorry for your misfortune, and I hope things work out to your benefit.

Curt

Curt

So if I change the fluid immediately, will I be able to tell a difference, OR is the damage already done and the new/correct fluid will stop any further damage, OR am I destined to having a new/rebuilt transmission. Give me a little help here. I have been driving for 40 years and have never had any kind of transmission problems.

DaWG,
I'm not a trans. expert, a consumer like yourself that expects quality customer service. Whether your trans. is damaged, I can't tell you; you would have to bring it to a reputable trans. shop if problems persist.

Did the shop that did the fluid change do anything about servicing with the wrong fluid? I would really press the "quality customer service" issue.
