will mercon V hurt a E4OD? what harm does it to. just saw another post where somebody had one, and could only use mercon.

If the dipstick says mercon, put in mercon. If it says mercon 5, put in mercon 5.
The engineers build the clutch packs, (well, don't build them, but you know what I mean), anyway, put in the correct fluid, or you're plain and simple asking for trouble. Shift harshness, (or softness, delayed shifts, slipping trans, all sorts of strange **** will happen.
Put in what it was designed to have in it.

You can not use Mercon in place of Mercon V. You can use Mercon V in place of Mercon. Read the lables on any after market bottle of ATF that meets Mercon V specs and it will say that you can use it in transmissions that specify Mercon. All the warnings tell you is to not use and ATF that meets only Mercon specs in a tranny that requires Mercon V.

That's what the oil companies say. Ford says that you can't use MERCON V in a transmission that requires MERCON. Who are you going to believe? I believe that Ford knows the transmissions better than the oil companies.

 

Ford publishes a spec that oil companies must meet in order to advertize that it meets the Mercon or Mercon V requirements. Now if the oil companies say that it meets both specs in the same bottle who am I to argue. It would be ignorant for me to insist that you see it my way. I will agree with you and err on the side of caution. If Ford is warning that you do not use Mercon V ATF in a Mercon tranny then do so at your own risk. BTY where does Ford get their oil? Do they refine it themselves?

I put Mercon V in the tranny on my 97 F150 and it specifies "Mercon" on the dipstick. It shifts mooth and I have had no problems with ym tranny since I changed the fluid with Mercon V 15,000 miles ago.

 

I've been using Mercon V in my '97 4R70W for about 1.5 years now, no problems @ 190K (knock on wood).

 

FORD, put MerconV in my E4OD when I had the fluid changed. They said its ok to run MerconV in a Mercon application, but not the other way around.

 

Some e4od's can use the fluid others have different clutch linings that make it slip with the mercon V

Ford filled 4R70W's with MERCON till 1997. In 1998 they switched to MERCON V. Because as I understand it, they had lots of "early" transmission failers.

But they didn't make any other changes to the Trany.

So now it is recomender to run MERCON V in all 4R70W transmissions reguardless of what the dip stick says.

As far as the E40D I couldn't tell ya.

Never, not ever ever, put MERCON V in a 4R100/E4OD. There is a very specific reason for this, and in any truck equipped with a 4R100 it specifies this very clearly.

MERCON V is an upgrade from MERCON for almost all transmissions, but the E4OD/4R100 is the mahjor exception, it will disolve the seals in it over time.


The engineering spec that allows MERCON V does not encompass MERCON specs, just most transmissions that originally called for MERCON have updated specs on them. It is also very common for dealers to not know this and even if they look up an F-150 on the OASIS system, it shows MERCON V for an F-150 with a note at the bottom (where some techs don't look) that says more or less "except for 4R100", since after 1999 most F-150s got the 4R70W, it's not uncommon for techs to miss this, but they're wrong, look in your manual and you'll see a whole half page devoted to this.

MERCON and MERCON V. These dual usage fluids are not to be used in
an automatic transmission that requires the use of MERCON type fluid.
However, these fluids may be used in transmissions that require MERCON V type fluid.

MERCON AND MERCON V type fluids are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Use of transmission fluid that indicates dual usage (MERCON and MERCON V) in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON may cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the reccomended fluid may cause transmission damage.
