No reverse M5R2

1988 F-150 has no reverse. Put in reverse the other day after work and started backing. Transmission popped out of gear and when I tried to re-engage nothing, no grinding or resistance. All five forward gears function perfectly. Any ideas? Or should I just trash it for a rebuilt or used transmission. I was told at work that shifter problems could cause this. I can install a transmission, and would hate to put waste money putting this sucker into a shop just to be told to replace transmission. This truck generally is used to tow a boat.

All other gears work? Most lilely bork either the fork or a pin inside the tranmission. You are probably best served by getting a tranny from a junk yard.
