As i recall, my 90 bronco had this tranny...

really HUGE transmission, comes along with a hefty price tag for any service/rebuilds. i payed close to 3,000 for a rebuild once...

All in all it was a heavy duty tranny, worked great until i blew it up.

My '97 F-250 LD 4X4 has the E4OD. I have 121,000 on it now. Changed the fluid twice, dumped the torque conveter too each time. During the summer months I tow a 5000 lb. boat and trailer every weekend. No trouble so far.

the E4OD is one of Fords best heavy duty transmissions of all time. It shares a few components a with the c-6. it is used in F150's with tow package up to the F450's and also used in the Ambulance's it is a huge beast and it will take a beating. As long as you dont abuse it by neglect to change fluid or it leaks its fluid out and burns up. It will not give you any problems. Stay away from shady aftermarket torque converters that transmission shops install. I have had a few of them (no names) tear up in customers vehicles. and every time the converter man came around I had him take it back and cut open the converter and show me. They only credit they gave me was for the converter itself. No money for labor or the overhaul that I had to re do. I no longer use anything from these people. If you can afford a Ford converter get it

I have to ask were you checking the pcm codes through your dealer on those converters? I build converters and I have seen way too many failures from pre 96 transmission due to faulty pcm's. The non powerstroke diesels were outright terrible for it. The lockup clutch will fry to nothing in a very short time. Also the powerstrokes have some pretty bad cooling problems from 99-01. This will also wipe out the converter in a hurry. IMO e40d transmissions are the worst crap ford ever put out in the early years. The torque converters have been through more changes than you could write a book about and so have the transmissions.
My father worked in the plant for 44 years. He told me that the c6 about put the plant out of business because they couldn't sell any service parts. The e4od about put them under because they couldn't keep them out. The 97 up units are about as good as they can get. If you want a strong e40d use 4r100 parts.
I agree there are alot of converter companies that slap some junk together to sell it. If they reused any of the early lockup pistons that were riveted together, the plastic stator cap, or even the front cover for powerstroke applications it was a piece of junk.

I have to agree with dog on this one, I have not seen a lot of the e4od's but the ones I have seen were junk. They weren't right even after a rebuild.

my 2 cents

E40d tranny

I have the e40d tranny in my 1995 ford f150 bolts up to 351 windser with 1356 transfer case I had alot of problems outa my e40d slipped through 1st 2nd and a tad in 3rd got her rebuilt runs good now no problems but the transfer case is another problem the high range fork is made out of aluminum and can break easy it's a dealer item that they don't make anymore but Borg Warner has a part # for it (4400596001) easy fix but a pain in the *** if you don't know that the fork is the problem my tranny went out at 167xxx miles put 10xxx on the rebuild no problems at all. But it is a huge monster of a tranny to be pulling out so have fun cause if it ain't been rebuilt it will need to be soon
Thanks wayde

Great answer! I'm sure they waited 10 years for your answer. This might be a new record in resurrecting an old post.
