1998 5.4 transmission od
1998 5.4 transmission od
Howdy I'm sure there is a thread in here about this ,but anyway I just purchased this truck my first automatic. It shifts fine and goes into overdrive okay but as soon as you start to pulll a slight hill or need to accelerate it feels like it shifts in and out of overdrive untill I finally push the switch to turn it off.Any and all help is appreciated.I have a 90 day warranty and would like to get it fixed asap...thanks again
It is programmed to take only so much throttle before downshifting.
This is dependent on road speed, engine RPM and throttle opening.
I can't tell if you are discribing a normal operation or if you are expecting operation an automatic cannot give.
Maybe you have a transmission gear hunting problem. Saw that before.
You have to understand that the auto trans won't allow you to lug the engine like a standard.
The usual min speed that OD will upshift is about 45 to 48 mph and under light throttle load. At these speeds, if you call for power with a lot of throttle , it will down shift right away back to 3rd.
So you have to decide if what you see is normal or not and have someone else that knows what a good shift is like try the truck out.
An example is in cruise control at 60 mph starting to climb a hill mine will shift down in an effort to keep the programmed road speed and not upshift until well over the top if let go long enough.
I can do better by foot control. It's the weight of the truck vs the low torque the motor makes, at low rpm.
I have a supercharged 5L with an aod automatic. In OD and cruise, the engine males so much torque that it won't shift the trans out of OD but just pulls right on and accelerates like an standard shift.
Engine power make all the difference in how an auto trans shifts. This is the general problem with these trucks, the engines are down on power for the weight they move.
