What do you think of this?!

Take a look at what I pulled out of my transmission! I'm sure others have seen similar with all of the broken springs out there, but Wow!

my gallery

I've gotten 2 new springs from the dealership (yellow and blue), and was curious about proper usage. My upper spring is okay, so will just re-use. I appears that I have an inner and outer spring from the dealership, but the truck had just the outer (larger) spring, as you can see in the photo. Should I use both of the new ones, or not install the inner?

Thanks for any help

Stu

BTW: '01 SCrew 4x4, 4R70W trans

It looks as if the springs have been replaced before, did anyone work on the trans? There are originally two lower springs. One is kind of a normal looking spring the other is a very tight small spring which fits inside of the larger spring. 1 spring on top of the piston and 2 springs on the bottom.

Not to my knowledge

I bought the truck used about 4 months ago with 102000 on it. I'm not aware that any work has been done on the tranny....especially since when I changed the fluid and filter back in November I found the factory plug still rolling around in the pan.

I did get both an inner and outer spring from the looks of it, but I don't want to make the shifting overly soft either...just want to take the kick out of it (bangs into gear if I get on it).

From my understanding there is a large configuration of different spring combinations used in the accumalters depending on engine size 2 or 4wd size and weight of truck etc. you may be able to check which springs were in it origanaly by the trans tag number. Also what you werer given may be a service replacement part. Same only different?????

It's back together

I double checked the parts with the parts dept., and they confirmed I had the right ones, and that there should be two. I used both springs, and went ahead and replaced the piston and the cup at the same time.

I wonder, since my truck was actually built 3/00, if there might be a difference between it and some of the newer '01s...perhaps they added the inner spring later for the SCrews? I dunno.

Shifting nicely now. 1- 2 is now smooth, even under acceleration. Downshifts seem to be better now as well.

Many thanks to the members of this forum that post the info I need to fix my truck!

I haven't extracted the spring from the piston yet...maybe I'll do that tonight and add some more pictures. That spring is really stuck in there!

Cheers,
Stu

update: yanked out the broken spring and took a couple of shots.
