Ok I was just doing some more resarch and this person has the same problem as my dad truck

1998 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD 4.0 SOHC mileage: 49000. The problem just started a couple of days ago. I noticed no problems with the way the vehicle drives or handles...but the 4WD HI and 4WD LO lights on the dashboard periodically (every 5 - 10 minutes) blink 5 times simultaneously. The dash is normal for 5 minutes, and then the lights blink again. This happens repetitively whether driving in town, on the highway, etc. Since it has been nice dry, summer weather, I have had the vehicle in 4WD AUTO the whole time. Is there any explanation for the blinking lights?

Don't expect to get drivetrain answers in this forum. I've had 2 questions posted on here and 0 answers. Any question beyond basic mechanics will most likely be a no answer.

Since you have blinking lights, I'd guess that some switch of sensor is complaining.

If you can get a hold of a code scanner, it might point you in the right dirrection.
