4WD Conversion
4WD Conversion
I'm exploring the possibility of converting a 1995 2WD to a 4WD. I've heard that the easiest way to do it is to get a roll-away chasis and just swapping everything out rather than trying to match the existing rear end to a new front.
Does anybody know the compatibility of transmission for that generation of F150. If i can find a 1991 4WD, will it swap right out with my 1995 2WD?

I think so. One of the tranny guru's can chime in to tell you for sure. Which engine and trans does the 95 have? I know there were changes made to the 302's between 91 and 95 because the firing order is different (found that out the hard way
). I would imagine that the trannys are all the same bolt patern for the bell housing. The only other questions would be if going from I-6 to V8 you would need to swap motor mounts. Those are the first things that come to my small mind anyway.
Hope that helps.

I'll be leaving the engine in (4.9 flat six) so i'm only concerned about the compatibility of the tranny. I've heard that there is some minor welding for a new cross member and the rest is just a bolt on job. Hopefully somebody can confirm this.
If its true, it will save a lot of headaches trying to match the current rear end.

Converting to a 4x4 using the TTB suspension is a pain. You must change the crossmember that is under the engine, which means drilling all those factory rivets. An easier swap would be to find a complete 4x4 frame and suspension and swap bodies and drive lines. When I worked in a 4x4 shop we did the conversion for a customer. A body and driveline swap would have been easier.
ouch. that kinda stinks. i've got a local tranny shop thats willing to do the work for me but i doubt they will be willing to do a body swap. are there any other approaches that won't break the bank and can be done by a small shop?
Because i've owned it for eight years, its been paid for for five years, i've worked it like a dog and not a single thing has gone wrong. I'd much rather throw a couple thousand at it and drive it for five more years then pick up a $400 car payment.

it is not hard to change cabs it is better then having to try to make every thing fit. the cab has 4 body mounts and the wiring and the brakes that have to be take off to do a cab change....if you go the other way you will have to just abought drop the frame to get to all the part or have to lay on your back for many hours cutting and grinding...
