Clutch problems,...Help

I have a 1995 F150 with a 4.9L straight 6, standard 5 speed transmision.

The problem is that sometimes (especially when it is cold) the clutch will stick when it is depressed and not come back up immediately. Once it does come back up it is very soft and makes it tough to change gears. I can add transmission fluid to the resevore and it will create more pressure to the clutch, but eventually it will get soft again. (Sometimes it takes days.)

Any idea what I should replace? What sort of cost I am looking at? Is this a project a novice could do? How much should I expect to pay to have this fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Probably the slave cylinder

Craig,
I have similar symptoms with my 96 F150 w/inline 6. Based on what I have read it is probably the slave cylinder. To replace the slave cylinder the tranny will need to be dropped. While you have it apart you may as well replace the clutch.

I have been looking at parts. Clutches vary from ~150 and up depending on what clutch you get. Slave cylinders are ~60. One place had them for 49 with purchase of a clutch kit.

I have heard of someone paying about ~1200 to have this done at a shop.

See the "need a new clutch" thread for more discussion.
