New Hurst shifter users

For those of you with the new 5-speed shifter,

How do you like it so far? Is it a big improvement over the stock shifter? Any feedback is appreciated!

I have the "new" sifter. I believe that there are actually two "new" shifters for our trucks. The one that we have been waiting so long for is the 5026. If you have a '99-'03 that is the one you would use. If you have a '97-'98 you would use the 5025. There seems to be some question about exactly when the change happened. I only bring this up so that people don't impulse buy. You will want to take the time to figure out which one you need.

I have been very happy with the Hurst shifter. It works like they say. I believe the claim that it reduces 30% of the travel. Just remember that 30%. It's not 50 and not 60. It's better but there are limits to what they can do without changing internal componants. You also want to keep in mind that all the internal componants are the same.

It's a worth while investment. It's much better than stock. Just don't get the hopes up too high.

I have the 5025 since my truck is a '98. I definitely love the feel, much more solid and precise than the stock shifter.

I do have some gear noise that wasn't noticable with the stock shifter - mostly in 5th gear.

I get noise in every gear, definitely most prominent in5th. I believe there is a sound insulating bushing that can be installed to reduce some of the noise that is transferred through the shifter. I guess we can see, well actually hear, why the stock shifter is so bulky. It's for the insulation.

I believe the 5026 is shipped with the insulating bushing.

I'll have to look into that insulating bushing and see if it makes a difference.

The stock shifter is pretty beefy - I can see why it would deaden any gear noise.

Question Hurst Shifter

Hey, I'd really like to get one of the new shifters. Can anyone tell me where I might find one? Can I get them online?

A few things you will have to realize with the shorter throw. You will need more force to shift the gears. It will not cure a shift grinding problem caused by worn or broken syncros. It may even make it worse. The instructions say to use a thread locking product on the shift stops. Make sure you do so. They can vibrate and actually tighten and cause shift problems. You will need to tint all your windows. The reason will be the blinding of other drivers from the silly grin on your face after you drive it.

I forgot to mention.... If you are going to speed shift it , going from 2nd to 3rd is much quicker. All that you need do is to push it forward from 2nd towards 3rd and let the spring move it sideways to line it up with the 3rd gear gate. The centering springs are a lot stiffer than the the ones in the stock shifter so you can do this.

Crash!, I'm sure has a lot more experiance than I. It took me a couple hours start to finish. If you dig a little there is a thread here in the transmission forum about my installation experiance and a bunch of pics. Look for something like: short throw.....anything new?
