5 spd tranny issues

You all seem very knowledgeable about these trucks. Hopefully you might be able to advise me about my problem

I bought my truck used last month. 2003 F-150 XL Sport, 4.2 2WD 5 spd tranny. At times, the tranny doesn't want to go into 1st gear at all. Noticed it when I bought it, but assumed it was me not hitting it right. Not the case at all.........
I changed the fluid out a couple days ago, now using a synthetic MERCON V ATF. Clutch master cylinder fluid is clean, and I haven;t needed to fill it. No leaks from the tranny either. Here's what I have noticed over the last day:
When it doesn't want to go back into 1st, it also won't go into any other gear, even when coming to a stop out of 3rd or 4th. It will go if I force it, but sometimes it takes a pretty forceful slam. Sometimes it will go smoothly if I go back to 1st from neutral while the truck is still creeping to a stop. Sometimes it works flawlessly. All the gears seem a little stiff going in, 3rd being the worst. Is this typical for this tranny, or do I have problems? The truck has only got 41,000 miles on it. Any advise you could provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

1st gear is not syncronized so you really have to have shafts speeds matched to get in there. My ranger has always been hard to get into 1st while moving, once you get stopped it goes right in. AFAIK these have the same basic transmission. I use GM syncromesh fluid in mine. ATF is a lousy lubricant. Why would you install friction modified mercon V in the manual it would make absolutely no difference. If using the sycromesh fluid doesn't help i would suggest inspection of the pilot bearing or possibly a bent shift fork.

Try bleeding the clutch before you spend money on an other oil change.

This is the issue that my wife was reporting. but it was limited to the first, second and reverse. i noticed that the hyrolic resevior was empty so i refilled. the problem went away for a week then the fluid leaked out and the problem returned.

I ended up taking the transmission out and replacing the clutch, pp, etc. I noticed the slave cylinder was coated with fluid, so I can guess that was the problem.

I did not see any fluid leaks either, but there was definitly fluid in the bell housing and probably air in the hydro line.

The slaves are know to leak. If your master was low then it is time for a new slave. Bleeding is a temporary fix.
