F-150 sound of running water
F-150 5 speed trans problem?
Hi,
I am a newbie and I have problems.
I just bot an '89 F-150 I6 5 speed (OD). It has a strange symptom. There is the sound of gurgling running water coming from the transmissin. If I start it in neutral, clutch depressed there is no sound. If I stay in neutral and release the clutch the sound starts. While driving, the sound continues except when I depress the clutch to shift.
Also, my owner's manual says the manual tranny takes ATF. Where do yu check it and top it off? I looked under the truck and saw that the rear half of the tranny was wet with oil. Suggestions?
What is the cause? How screwed am I?
Thanks (while praying)

My best guess would be the throw-out bearing is toast. When you push the clutch in you load it and the noise goes away. With the clutch out then there is no load on the bearing and it makes noise. Seen it several times. Will require same procedure as changing clutch and it would be really smart to change the clutch pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and probably the slave cylinder as they are prone to leaking in those trucks. If you have to have the whole tranny out anyway might as well make it count.
The to check the fluid there is a check plug on the drivers side of the tranny if I remember correctly. Fill it to the bottom of the hole if I remember correctly.
Hope that helps.
