Transmission removal
Transmission removal
I am trying to replace the clutch, pp, etc. of my 97 v6 2wd f150. I have removed all brackets and bolts. i removed 8 bolts from the bell housing and have shifted the transmission about 1/2" to 1" back from the engine block. Except the right side, there seems to be something still connected near the starter.
does any one know if the starter needs to be removed or is there something behind it? does anyone have a good tutorial on how to remove this transmission?

Thanks for the info, I now have the transmission down. I used a tool to remove the bearing from the flywheel, but it appears that only the inner bearing sleeve came out.
It appears the I have to use the same technique to remove the outer bracket as well, right?

I did my trans on my stang this summer. I had a heck of a time removing the "pilot bearing" once the guts of it came out then I had to remove the rest of it. make sure you don't damage the hole to much.
To install it find a socket the same size and use that and a hammer to drive it in.

Get a piece of steel rod or something that fits in the hole tight. Pack the hole full of grease and drive the rod in. It will push the bearing right out.

My pilot bearing was a roller type and had pretty much disintegrated.

Thanks to all who replied.
I ended up removing the bearing in two parts.
My wifes truck is now back together, 18 hours of work over three days.
The only reminaing thing is to reconnect the hydrolic line to the connector on the side of the transmission.
is there a special tool or technique to pushing the male and female ends together?
thanks to all.

Below is a picture of a connector like yours. The hose has a fitting thet snaps into the slave cylinder. Push on it till you hear a click. If you don't hear a click then pull it off. If it is not properly seated it will pull off. If it is ok it will not.
EDIT: You may have to bleed the hydraulic system if you got air in it. You will know when you push on the clutch and the pedal falls to the floor and you can not get it into gear or it grinds when shifting.

thanks for your response.
The picture is what i'm looking at now, except there is a rubber o-ring on the male end. I replaced my o-ring but i'm thinking that the dimension is not the correct size.
Is it possible to install this by hand with the transmission in place. or is there a tool that is used to supply enough force.

I have the dreaded slave cylinder to replace also. I have a '90 5 speed overdrive trans 300ci. Question is, do you have to remove the floor shifter to remove the trans and if so how? I've taken the boot off and it has internal linkages. Thanks.
well i worked on trying to get mine out for a while, then i just manged to drop the tranny easily until i could angle it enough to get the stick down through the opening.
i would not recommend doing it, i scratched the paint on the stick and had to repaint it.
but the my unit did not have any exposed linkage, like yours. so i did not have to deal with that.
i do rember that someone else on this site posted the method to remove the stick. the date of their posting was in 2005 or 2006, but after i did mine. search this site and you may save some time and trouble.
good luck.

Thanks. I got the stick out and have dropped the tranny. Next question is how to unhook the hydraulic line from the old slave? I got a tool that is supposed to slide down and depress the fingers so it will unhook. Doesn't seem to fit. (it is a multi sized tool)
Look at the picture that I posted. The white plastic band on the hose fitting is the release mechanism. It has to be pushed into the fitting to release the internal retainer. Placing two flat screwdrivers 180° apart and pushing on it will also release it. Just make sure that they are flat against the plastic so they don't damage it.
