Thumbs down poor shift from 1st. to 2nd.

Hello everyone! My truck has the 4r70w in it with the 5.4. I have never liked the way it shifts from 1st. to 2nd. If you are on the throttle about half to 3/4 when it shifts from 1st. to 2nd., it will shift but feels like truck quits moving foreward for about 2 seconds, then shifts. Acts like the brakes will apply then it will goe ahead and shift. Kind of like a delay. Would a shift kit fix this problem or anyone know of a fix?

No a shift kit will not correct it. You need to replace your 1-2 accumulator springs.

Will a stiffer spring make it shift into gear quicker instead of lag.
Thanks for the reply!

The big issue with the trans. 1-2 shift is the torque reduction that is built into the computer tune. This takes timing and fuel out of the engine before during and for a short time after the shift, it feels as though the truck falls on it's face then picks up. Call Troyer Performance tehy can supply you with a Superchip tuner or a custom tune depending on what you want, you can also go with a factory tech valvebody but if the truck is basicaly stock this is probly not necessary. Talk to Mike, he can make youre truck shift exactly the way you want. The differance is unbeliavble.
Mike did a custom tune for me and I could'nt be more happy. The truck is like a differant vehickle. Shifts are perfict and overdrive and converter lock up are great. Best money I have ever spent for a modifacation.

The springs will make the shift firmer. You need to modify the valvebody for quicker shifts or you can do it through a tuner. The problem with using a tuner is that it increases the pressure in the trans too much which can damage the clutches.

My solution has been using a tuner to slightly bump shift pressures (5-15 lbs over stock) and also to keep the overdrive locked out unless I'm on the highway. My tranny shifts like crap when I forget to lock out the overdrive. It wants to drop into overdrive whenever I let off the gas pedal at any speed over 25 mph. Then when I press the gas again, I need to wait for the pressure to build enough to kick it out of overdrive and by that point I'm pressing hard enough for it to drop down another gear and then finally lurch forward. A total PITA unless I shut off the overdrive alltogether. My fuel economy went up slightly since I started locking out overdrive since I'm driving much more smoothly now.
