Help! Major Transmission trouble

Hi,

I was driving my truck and stopped at a stop sign. When we got ready to go, I would push on the gas and nothing would happen. If I kept the gas pushed for about 5 seconds, the transmission would engage, jerk us back into our seats and bark the tires. I took it to Cottman Transmission about a month ago and they did their free diagnostic check and drove it around and said it was fine. Now it is a lot worse. I think it is at the point of needing a new transmission but needed some more information as to what it could be. I thought about changing the fluid and filter to see if that would help but didn't want to try it if it isn't going to help any.

Thanks,

Chris

Check the fluid level, if it's good then it's probably tranny time. If the fluid looks or smells burnt, means the clutches have gone and it's rebuild time. It's possible the filter has clogged, but that would also mean internal damage. That's about the only way you would get enough debris in the pan to clog the filter.

Either way it sucks, your baby is off the road for a bit.

Hopefully not for long. I have a couple of friends and family members that can get me a decent deal on a new transmission or a rebuild. Like you said, either way, it sucks. Thanks for the advise though.

What if it is a plugged filter? If you change all the fluid and don't change the filter have you really helped anything? Might act better for a few days but certainly isn't a fix. I say drain the converter and drop the pan to change the filter.

I have stumbled onto another problem. I called a couple of shops and one of the I called has been in business for 34 years, is a member of BBB. When I spoke to the gentleman, he said he doesn't think that what my truck is doing is a transmission problem. Like I said before, if I hold the gas pedal down for about 5-10 seconds, it will rev the engine and engage into gear, thus barking the tires. What do I do in this situation? Do I need to start calling around getting more prices?

Thanks,

Chris

If it's not a transmission problem what does he think it is? TPS maybe?

I had a friend at church that had to have his tps sensor replaced. He said it will make the engine rev up without pressing the gas and sometimes will not crank up. He has been working on Ford's for a long time. He said my problem sounds like a transmission problem as well. I even called the Ford Dealership and spoke to a service advisor and he said it sounded like the transmission was going out.

Thanks,

Chris

Take it in to a GOOD tranny shop, such as the one you mentioned earlier. They will tell you if it is your transmission. Had a problem with an '87 Tbird I had about a year ago. The car just wouldn't go, it would bog and chug like crazy, took forever to get up to speed. Thought it was the tranny slipping, the tech at the shop checked it and it turned out to be a catalytic converter had melted down, plugging the exhaust.

My money is still on your tranny being the culprit, but get it checked to be sure.

Is the engine reving when you hit the gas? If it is the transmission is the culprit. If the engine doesn't rev it could be many different things. The TPS can fail a different way everytime. His results may not be the same as yours.

Hi,

I took it to a tranny shop and they said my tranny went out. They rebuilt my tranny and gave me a 12m/12000 mile warranty. It ended up costing me 1700. I figured it was getting time to replace it anyway. With my truck having 135,000 before a tranny rebuild, it had pretty good mileage. The guy running the shop said he has seen trucks needing tranny rebuilds sooner than mine. I guess I got my money's worth out of the old tranny. If anyone lives in South GA near McDonough, Stockbridge, or around this area, I will recommend Judson Transmission. They did an excellent job on my transmission. My price includes towing as well because I had to get it towed to their shop. My truck is good as new like I just picked it up brand new from the dealership.
