94 E40D SERIOUS shake!
Hey... guys, need a hand with something else! Got the tranny into my '94 F-150, 351, And it's making a terrible noise, almost like a rod knock! It's an E4OD tranny, with an AOD torque converter. I thought maybe the converter bolts were loose, and i snugged em up a bit, but it's still making the noise! Any help is appreciated! Thanks
Hmmmm
Nobody knows? I think it might be the converter walking back and forth in the tranny, but i'm not sure...The tranny shakes like a SOB when it's in park, but stops when you bring it around 2,000 RPM. Also, the output shaft spins in park, but stops in drive! What's going on???
Did it do it after you had been driving for a while, or right after you put it in ??? I had a problem when I put the C4 tranny in my Stang. I had the wrong T/C. Although it was a C4 T/C the splines were different than those on the front of the C4 I was putting in. When I started it up it made a hellatious noise in the bell housing area. Next thing I know it made a nasty ka thunk. The vibrations broke the splines right off of the front pump.
AOD converters are way too short. I'm surprised it even drives the pump. Plus the aod converter has the wrong spline count. I can't believe you even got an AOD converter in there because the AOD uses direct drive which doesn't leave much room for the massive E40d input shaft. Are you sure you didn't install a 4r70w converter? 4r70w converter are very similar but they still won't work. You need a E40d/4r100/5r110 converter.
hmmmm
Actually, I'm pretty sure it was an AODE converter, not an AOD. It's the OD tranny from a '95 F-150, 302. The converter fit into my E4OD perfectly, and seemed to go in pretty good. But then once we fired her up, she knocked and shook the tranny like a SONUBA BEACH! I had an E4OD in the truck originally, and The converter from THAT wouldnt seem to fit into my NEW E4OD. I'm starting to think I may have had a 4R100! Would the converter from a 4r100 work in the new E4OD?? Thanks!
If it's rattling like that i would get it out of there ASAP, seriously. Like I said before, I made that mistake once and it wasn't pretty.

The 4r100 converter will work fine as they are pretty much the same.
I would imagine a 4r70w converter with it's short pilot would not even get the pilot into the crank...ooops
That would explain the noise the converter is not held straight.
I would imagine your transmission is half destroyed by now.
The 4r70w does have the correct spline count but there is no way the 4r70w lockup will function properly.

Alright...I know now that i've got to put my 4r100 Converter into my new E4OD. But i already tried that, and it wouldnt work! It wouldnt come out far enough to get the converter through the flywheel...I fiddled with the converter for like a half an hour before attempting to put the tranny in! If i grab hold of the converter while it's in the tranny on the ground, I can wiggle it up and down! Should It do this? I am getting very frustrated with this tranny! We already had it in once, and the converter bound up, so i Couldnt turn it to get to the other bolts...So we took it out, and put in the AODE converter, and it locked right in, and sat beautifully! Then this happens....What am I doing wrong? How can I make the 4r100 Converter work with my New E4OD?
What is the difference between the 4r70w and the E4OD? Also, is the 4r100 the same as an E4OD? I got the NEW E4OD out today, and tried the converter from my "unknown" tranny. It didnt fit in. I changed the input shafts. It didnt fit in. WHAT IS GOING ON! The New E4OD i have now, has an orange sticker on the side of the pan (which is deeper than my original tranny's pan) That says
"1994 E4OD exchange Program, DO NOT SERVICE....Void after December 1st, 1994." WHAT THE HELL IS THIS NOW!??! I'm beginning to get really pissed off! Is there anyone who can accurately describe/post a pic of the different trannys? Dirty dog, alan, and all you guys, I am really thankful for all this help! Thanks so much!

The 4r70w transmission is fords light duty unit mostly used in cars. It is also used in f150 trucks not in f250 or f350.
The E40d is the big monster transmission. Early ones had serious problems but the later ones are some of the strongest transmissions built. The 4r100 is basically a redesign of the E40D.
It looks the same and works the same but ford changed some parts and changed the name.
The 4r70w converters have a short pilot on them (the part that goes into the crank on the engine). I woul guess it is 3/4 of an inch tall. The E40D converters have a much longer pilot. This is why there are different flexplates for the 2 different transmissions. The difference between E40D converters and 4r100 converters is just another redesign thing. The 4r100 converters all have a multiplate clutch in them.
Some powerstroke E40D converters had a multiplate but I doubt you will ever see one as they have probably all failed by now. E40D converters and 4r100 converters interchange completely. I will try to get some pictures monday when I am at work. If you post some pictures I wil tell you what you have.

Hmmm
Well, I know for a fact that the Tranny is either an E4OD, or a 4r100, because the thing IS a monster. I got the tranny out for the FOURTH time yesterday, and tried playing around with the converter from my original tranny. Won't fit into the new Tranny!
AAAAAAAAAAA! The trannies are identical, except for a deeper pan on my new one (which i was told means it was a 4wd tranny)
There shouldnt be any difference between the 4wd and the 2wd trannies, right? Help!

Uh-oh
Really? I hope the tranny isn't damaged! Could it be possible that the converter is no good? ( I left it outside all winter...
)
I cleaned the splines inside my converter, and the splines on the tranny as well, but it seems like it goes on smooth! It just won't lock in properly! Someone told me I may have an E4OD from a '94 F350, with a 460...Is this a modified E4OD that is causing this? I'll get pics as soon as I can, if i don't resolve it beforehand! Thanks guys!
