Driving question, auto transmission

I like to shift to netural at a red light intersection or when slowing down going off on an exit ramp on a highway.

Some people tell me that this constant clicking between D and N all the time is going to ruin my transmission. Is that true? I mean, it's not like I rev it up in neutral and shift it to drive at the same time, I give it time to engage before accelerating.

I only do it because I thought it was less rough on pedal braking and on engine braking work. A transmission mechanic told me that what I do would not hurt but doubted the usefulness of what I was doing. I thought I could save some gas too that way.

It's a waste of time, it adds to traffic safety concerns, and it repetitively engages your transmission clutches. Engine braking increases brake life.
