Can filter placement cause trans failure?
Can filter placement cause trans failure?
Can a misplaced filter cause a tranmission failure? The trans in question is a 4R70W and it appears that the filter may have been twisted a bit. There is even a small crease in the metal on the bottom of the filter where it looks like the pan 'forced' against the filter housing. BTW the fluid looked like blood and the magnet was 'furry' at the same time as this discovery.

red fluid is good color and magnets always get the fury look. what you dont want to see is big chunks of metal the fine shavings are normal and thats what the filter and magnet are there for.
now if there wasnt a filter it could cause a failure. if the filter was in the pick up hole and sealed around then the fluid had to go through filter and would be ok. if it didnt seat in the pick up hole it could let the shavings by it and cause damage.
if you drained the fluid and it was all black with little fiber looking strands in it the tranny prolly wont shift right again with new fluid in it. once the fluid is black and fibery its best to leave it in and hope for the best.
